Piquet is seriously underrated. Victimized Reutemann, Prost, Senna and Mansell in his way to his 3-times drivers championships.
The first two in slower cars than his opponents and the last title against the team that wanted an British champion.
Without Williams favouring Mansell in ‘86, Piquet would have been 4-times champion.

In 1983 after the Netherlands race where he was thrown off the track in a Prost mistake, Piquet was asked about rumors that he was going to Ferrari in 1984. The answer:
"It would be nice to go to Ferrari and become a three-time champion there ..."
The reporter: - But you are a champion only once!
Piquet: "- But I will be a double champion this year."
The interview was for a Brazilian reporter. The European press would laugh if they knew, because at the time of the championship there were 3 races to go and Piquet was only 4th in the championship. And in the end, he really became a two-time champion.
Many years later asked why he did not agree to go to Ferrari, he replied:
"If I go to drive for Ferrari, I would just be a Ferrari driver. At Brabham, I was Nelson Piquet."

Probably one of the three greatest drivers of all time, and certainly the most underrated. The only driver twice champion without driving in the best team, author of the biggest overtaking in the history of F-1 and more, he developed technologies that are still used today, such as the tire blanket .. Simply great! Simply legendary!!!

Piquet facts:
Started his career with no support, helping Reutmann. Won his first title against the argentinian 2 years later.
Won 2 titles with the second best car of the grid.
Used to remove the engine of his transporting vehicle to use it in his racing car, only to reasemble it after each race and move on.
While traveling at the beginning of his career, barely took showers.
Invented the tire heating systems.
Helped invent the suspended nose.
Helped develop the active suspension.
Was a great tennis player, even playing professionaly.
Had his driver´s license suspended in his hometown for speeding. He had to undergo basic lessons as a penalty.
Hated street circuits.
After being asked by a reporter, about who he would honnor his title to, he said he would honnor it to himself, since he made all the effort to win it.
After being asked alongside Mansell about who was the best, him or Senna, he says:
" I´m alive"

Finnaly. Piquet is so underrated that it's annoying. People always upping the likes of Villeneuve, Mansell or Mika who would be no match for Nelson in is prime. This is a proper great one.

Thank you Formula 1 for uploading this. It seems unfair that of all the drivers with 3+ WCs, Piquet is portrayed as the odd one out, especially in Europe. Piquet was a highly intelligent, astute, quick driver with a high level of engineering ability, which often gets overlooked.
That Las Vegas circuit was brutal - nearly 40 degrees Celsius, and high-G-force, constant radius corners in ground-effect cars :( Would have liked to have seen one of Nelson's wins from 1980 - his drives in Long Beach and Holland were fab.
